NFCC Awards & Achievements 2025
Roger Bacon Cup (fastest 25) – Gary Lock 51:29
Golden Jubilee Cup (Fastest 100) – Gary Lock 04:00:02 12th at national championships.
Eric Dunstan Veterans B.A.R Cup – Gary Lock
Wareham Cup (Fastest 50) – Gary Lock 01:54:57
Some of you have probably not met our first winner, however his name has been ever present in recent years sweeping the club’s awards for long distance time trials. Though his focus these days is on triathlons he has hinted that we might see him on Tuesday
evenings this year as well as at the open events. Collecting the club awards for the fastest, 25, 50, 100 and long distance BAR this year is Gary Lock. The standout performance among these has to be a 12th place at the national 100 mile championships in a time of 4hrs 00m 02s, he has assured me that he was not upset about the 2 seconds!
Ten Series Div 4 – Steve Moss & Matt Cafferky
The ten series division 4 produced the tightest battle of all the divisions in 2025 with Matt Cafferky and Steve Moss trading blows throughout the summer. In the event of a tie, the winner would usually be decided on count back but in this instance their results are identical! So having decided that an arm wrestle might not be a fair fight, the only thing for it is a dance off! – We actually have 2 medals to save any embarrassment.
Ten Series Div 3 – Emma Shepherd
Division 3, while not quite as close as division 4, was still a good contest between Paul Hubbard and Emma Shepherd. A strong start to the season meant that Emma was able to hold off a late charge from Paul and takes the title.
Rhinefield Trophy (Ten Series Div2) – Hamish Leeds
Consistency is key, and in division 2 it was another of the newer faces in the club who came out on top. Hamish Leeds takes home the trophy for the second tier.
Tim Millward Trophy (Ten Series Div1) – James Mapley
There was a new face on the scene in this year’s ten series, and James Mapley quickly showed he meant business mixing it with some of NFCCs quickest riders in division 1. With some very impressive times across the forest’s notoriously slow courses, James takes the crown in the premier league of club time trials.
Cook Cup (club Champion) – James Mapley
This award is given for the fastest combined time on the 5 main courses used throughout the season. It is therefore unsurprising that the ‘club champion’ is also the winner of the ten series, James Mapley!
New Knightwood Trophy (Road Bike Series Open) – James Noah
The Road bike series was once again a success with a large number of riders competing across the season. Just 2 points separate the top two in the Open road bike competition, despite a tough challenge from Glen, James Noah topped the table.
HE Figgures Bowl (Fastest Combined 10/10/25 Female) – Sien VdP 23.653 mph
Margaret Read Trophy (Road Bike Series F) – Sien VdP
The female competition in the road bike series was decided by fine margins last season. Once again proving herself to be consistently the fastest woman in the club, Sien has defended her title.
Knightwood Trophy (fastest junior rider over 10/10/10 time trials) – Eloise Knight
Eloise 3rd in the road bike series has impressed again and shown that there is hope for at least one of the knights in the club.
New Forest Circuits Shield (15 Challenge) – Paul Lockyer
Awarded for the best 2 results from the 3 15 mile events, for the second year running this series was won by Paul Lockyer.
Roger Bacon Cyclocross Trophy – Phill Brown
Cyclocross is a tough discipline, and one that is not for everyone. The winner of this year’s award has spent the past few years adamantly denying that it would be the perfect event for them. Surprising no one but himself, Phill Brown has produced a remarkable ‘rookie’ season to challenge for the senior title in the Wessex League.
Road (Track) Champion – Alex Setchell
This year saw racing return once more to the Sunderland hangar at Calshot, the 140 metre velodrome has made a bit of a name for itself this year on social media with Laura Kenny revealing it to be her least favourite track to ride, likening it to riding ‘in a bucket in a fridge’. That has not deterred a (fool)hardy bunch of regulars which include a few NFCC members from giving it a crack in 2025. 3 events took place October-November with Alex Setchell, Matt Knight and Joe Shepherd all turning out in Forest colours. Alex has separated himself from the rest, scoring 51 points this season and topping the NFCC rankings. Despite a close inspection of the cote d’azur at round 2.
Mechanic of the year – Phil Jones
Assembling at the start we were greeted by a cacophony of mechanical noises approaching. We were surprised to see it emanating from the steed of ace mechanic Phil J. He immediately confessed that his best bike was already packed for France, and he had assembled this one in a hurry. Given his trade it seemed like this bike was concocted from bits of old boilers and central heating systems he had decommissioned. Never one to shy away from a mechanical challenge, Phil had been to a local garage and bought a large can of WD40 which he doused liberally over all the offending parts. He ruefully told us he paid more for this can at the garage than he would normally pay for a tray of the stuff with his trade account. Reluctant to waste any, Phil rode the whole ride with a massive can of WD40 sticking out of his pocket. Needless to say, the barrel was decided before the ride started. Phill also managed to have more punctures on Gravel n Grog rides than pints.
Most miles in a Calendar year – Graham Fletcher
Activities 379 | Distance 23,712.0 km | Elev Gain 204,845 m | Time 910h 26m
While he hasn’t quite matched the eyewatering 26,000km he managed in 2024, Graham Fletcher has retained his tub of vaseline with 23,712km in 2025. This included over 200,00m of elevation gain.
Lanterne Rouge – Dan Soutan
Day 4 of training camp. We went up The Tourmalet in freezing fog and then on to Croix blanche. Heading back down into the valley for an easy ride home we were faced with several miles of freshly laid and pretty lethal gravel. Dan decided to put precaution first and sat off the back to such a degree that he lost sight of the man in front. Not a problem until he took a wrong turn and ended up in a remote village in the wrong valley with no signal on his wahoo. Various search parties were sent out without success until messages pinpointing the group’s exact location were received. Dan eventually received a message but then followed the arrows in the wrong direction! Meanwhile the exhausted group waited with increasing impatience and exasperation for our hapless hero. After an hour and a quarter Dan finally made it to the right valley after adding significantly to his mileage and altitude on an already brutal ride. Both exhausting himself and the patience of his clubmates.
Weekend Rouleur (order of the peloton) – Jane Hardy
This year’s winner of the ‘order of the peloton’ award has been a regular on Sunday rides and is an admirable all-weather cyclist. Jane is always enthusiastic and an accomplished rider.
Most distance in 24 Hrs – Ray Claridge
Distance 392.29 km | Elev Gain 7,187 m | Time 17h 51
For the uninitiated, the Bryan Chapman Memorial is a 600km audax from Chepstow to Menai Bridge and back, named after a Bristol cyclist who used to ride to his mechanic on the other side of Wales to get his bike worked on before riding home again. Those of you who are familiar with Ray will not be surprised to hear of his Audax exploits. Chapeau, Ray.
