Saturday Club Ride

We were blessed with another clement autumnal day this week for the club ride. This week was a 104Km route around the forest taking in the picturesque views of multi hued trees and falling leaves. We were joined by Ali for her first Saturday ride plus David and Rod making their first appearance for a while. We also had the pleasure of Joe’s company for a while as he managed his recovery within the strict limits laid down by his physio.

The ride headed north and up Bolderwood before heading east and south to Steff’s for a mid ride coffee stop in Beaulieu, which might be our last al fresco stop of the year. At the coffee stop we were joined by Phil G (and Lucy who had been stalking him on her tracking app to make sure he wasn’t overdoing it). Phil has been battling another dose of seasonal lurgy which is cutting down his mileage, but he was still able to lurk in hedgerows and take great photos. We did welcome back Phil J from his recent virus and thanked him for keeping his distance the last few weeks and not doing a Typhoid Mary impression. This bought the number of Phil’s to four which is above the safe limit, so we had to banish Phill B post coffee being the most junior of the sub species Phillip.
Next to leave the peloton was Rod. But not before he’d made the cut for the barrel this week. His socks were a clear violation of UCI rule Rule 1.3.033; socks may not rise above the height defined by half the distance between the middle of the lateral malleolus and the middle of the fibula head. This flagrant disregard for the rules was deemed barrel worthy by the one-man junta that is the barrel committee. The only possible mitigation looking at his attire was that he was leaving early to play goalie for some god-awful Saturday afternoon football team!
There were a few more contenders for the barrel as we rode across Setthorns and onto Burley. We appeared to have arranged our club ride on the same day that the “I can see round blind bends and through blind crests motor club” that was having a mass meeting in the forest. Despite riding in our usual close and tight formation it seemed in vogue to be overtaking without any consideration of oncoming traffic.
Smithy peeled off at Burley and the rest of the peloton made it back to Brockenhurst where most of the remainder convened at The Absent Pony for Second Coffee Club. Mileage monster Bus Pass Graham rounded up to over 100 miles so extra kudos to him. But kudos to the whole peloton, smartly attired, mechanically perfect bikes, tight group riding, mudguards all round. Chapeau everyone.
– Barry.

Sunday Club Ride

Nothing too exciting to report from this weeks Sunday club ride. An excellent turnout of 18 (I Think) considering the rather ‘fresh’ start. It soon warmed up though and wasn’t too windy so an enjoyable and social ride. The Ipley Cross and St Leonards loop route is probably the shortest quickest route on the regular rides schedule so we made it back to the cafe well in time to observe the Remembrance day two minutes silence at 11.00A.M.

Wessex CX Rd.9: Newbury

The boys were on for for round nine of the Wessex CX League at Newbury Showground this weekend. Matt Knight was first of the NFCC riders on the fast course this weekend and managed to bag 42nd place in the Masters 40-49 category. Later in the Day, Joe Shepherd and Phill Brown stayed rubber-side-down in the senior race. Brown went off the line like a man possessed and made the race fast and hard right from the whistle – his lead only lasted for half of the first lap, before slowly slipping all the way back to 10th place. Joe had a solid start and his experience and consistency saw him battle through for 15th place on the day.

Southwest CX round

A trip over the south grid to Escot Park in Devon for Southwest CX round 5 for Jay T this weekend. Good course although the heavy downpours and plenty of elevation made for tough conditions. Because I’m ” not from round these parts ” I wasn’t gridded so another back row start! A long uphill start meant a few places were gained early then settled in and picked off riders as the laps ticked by. Eventually catching the leader with a couple of laps to go. A good back and forth lap testing each other then early on the last lap I pushed hard on the uphills, got the gap and pulled away.
