Goodwood Summer Series Rd. 5

Seems to be becoming a regular occurrence that Phill & Jay escape the forest for an evening in the sunshine at Goodwood Motor Circuit – this week for round 5 of the Southdown Velo Summer Series. This week, it was Jay that finished with the bragging rights, crossing he line 5th in the Cat4 mens race. Phill missed the break of 9 riders in the Cat3 mens race, but joined the bunch sprint from the following peloton and crossed the line 13th.

Thursday evening Chain Gang 10

Note to all chain gangers, for June and July the start time moves to 1900.

Saturday Club Ride

The sunny weather raised another good sized group of riders out for this weeks club ride – splitting into two groups, it was a charge into the brisk northerly wind on a direct route to Leckford Farm Shop for refreshments, before being chased home by the wind back to Brockenhurst. The six in the first group soon dropped to four, but that only gave them a bigger advantage in getting to the coffee stop even earlier. No reports of any misadventures have been revealed from group two on the road so this weeks badge of honour goes to Phill Brown who managed to snap the front off his cleats while doing a wheelie mid ride – leaving him limping his way through the second half of the ride.

Sunday Club Ride

A pair The beautiful weather ensured a bumper turnout of 19 on this weeks Sunday club ride and three groups were required to keep things in order. Group one disappeared into the distance never to be seen or heard of again but group 3 soon overtook group two as Tom (group 2) searched for a bit of his lovely new Roubaix which he had heard drop off. Group two soon became group two again and were joined by Steve ‘Zwift’ Tuck on a rare excursion out of his garage. Group three soon became half of group three as three of group three took an alternative route to the cafe, thus becoming group 4…
For the next 20K it was Groundhog Day for those who had done the same route into the same brutal headwind on the clubs Saturday ride. Only difference was that we were doing it with buggered legs and had run out of sufficiently expressive swear words.

Bramshaw hill descent gave a little relief and then the three remaining group three-ers came across half of the group two-ers who had stopped to fix Steve’s puncture, As punctures rarely happen in the virtual reality world of Zwift, Steve seemed a tad out of practice but eventually we got him up and running and were rejoined by the rest of group two now group two/three. The decision to include Pipers Wait on the return leg started to feel like a bad decision by route planner Phil at this point as his legs seemed to go into full retreat but he resisted the temptation to roll the 2K downhill to his front door. The group had some fun taking revenge on the old airfield, coasting along at 45kph before bypassing Brock, back up to Setley ridge for coffee and cake in the sunshine. Lovely to welcome two new riders to the fold, Lauren and John who we hope to see again soon.

UCI Tour of Cambridge

Rumours of two NFCC riders completing the UCI Tour of Cambridge Grand Fondo have been rumbling around the forest – Ben George and Rupert Williams were both seen to cross the finish line of the 66 mile route covering over 2100ft of climbing.

Bowland Brevet Audax

Never one to miss the opportunity to take part in a cycling event, Reece Dawson managed to complete the Bowland Brevet Audax on his way home from a week of climbing hills in the Lake District. Covering the steep slopes of the Nick o’Pendle, Waddington Fell and the glorious grades of the Trough of Bowland over a 100km route.
