All the latest news, events, and results for NFCC Members from the previous week of two-wheeled adventures…

Gravel ‘n’ Grogg

Another stellar turnout for Tuesday night’s critically acclaimed gravel ride. Back to one of the original routes again this week with the return of a certain Mr Biggs, so the pace was pushed on a little higher than the previous week. Other than Phill B not paying attention to the planned and publicised route and comically riding into a ditch, the ride was without issue again, which is always nice! The post-ride debrief at the Lyndhurst Nondescripts club covered all subjects as usual, from the ceiling falling down to doping in professional cycling. Never a dull moment…

Sunday Club Ride

We got lucky again this Sunday with clear blue skies and gentle winds albeit with a pretty Baltic start. So cold was it in fact that Budge, a stalwart supporter of the bare knee brigade dusted off the long trousers from the back of his cupboard. None of this softy nonsense however from Rod Hardnutt who wins the Long-tights refusenik award for 2025. We started out as a two grouper but soon became an accidental 3 grouper with a few dropping off the back of group two. A reminder to all to let the ride-leader know if this happens as it’s very hard from the pointy end to be sure whether everyone is present and correct.

Meanwhile Group One was having its own issue, James A‘s gears were in ‘manual mode’ meaning that to change rings he had to get off the bike and literally hoik them into place. Secondly they had suffered their first puncture of the day. unctures can happen to the best of us so as long as one is running a pair of suitable winter tyres in good condition no one is going to lay blame at your door. However, it has been suggested to me that Dan S’s tyres were not only in the Summer souplesse category but also worn to the thinness of graphene.Group two had a regroup but with Sunday stalwart Jane H feeling particularly meh following some jabs we decided to cut them loose. Jane eventually got a pick up, Andrew D took a detour and John B took a shortcut. The rest of group two made steady progress and enjoyed the sunshine.
Group one had reasserted itself at the front, but alas heading into Brock had suffered another puncture with Dan the re-offender. Group two therefore had the pleasure of a little schadenfreuder as we passed knowing that we’d get to the cafe first. Dans latest puncture proved terminal, and he was forced to limp into Brockenhurst station to take the train of shame back home. Dan can look forward to an afternoon of his supportive clubmates sending him Black Friday winter tyre deals. The cafe was bathed in sunshine as group two arrived, shortly followed by group one and John B after his detour.
Great ride as always and nice to welcome new rider Neale into the fold and Luke R after a long interval.

Gorrick Muc-Off Brass Monkeys XC Endurance Series Round 1 – The Christmas Cracker

Jay T was in action again this weekend at the Gorrick Muc-Off Brass Monkeys XC Endurance Series Round 1 – The Christmas Cracker. After his last race on an ebike, Jay reported:
Back to analogue pedal power this week for Round 1 of the Gorricks Brass Monkeys XC Endurance MTB series.
A cold but sunny day greeted nearly 250 riders at Minley Warren near Fleet, along with great conditions for the fun, flowing course. A good start, then a bit of an effort meant I was in the leading group of three Juniors and myself for the first three quarters of the lap until a small slip in a technical rooty gully, followed by a remount/ dismount/ straighten bars/ remount/ dismount/ more straightening/ remount meant they were gone!! Settling back into a rhythm and now not riding blindly at close quarters, I picked up a fellow competitor from the senior category who I rode with for the remainder of the race, pushing each other to an uncomfortable pace! Completing four laps in just under two hours meant I crossed the line for the top step of the podium ahead of nearly 75 fellow old boys in my 40+ category.
