Gravel n GrogJust 5 on the gravel n grog ride this week. The forecast wasn’t great, hence Chaingang being a non-starter but it turned out pretty mild. Barry had made his way up to the start line in Lyndhurst and was duly awarded with a puncture that whilst healed could not be pumped up due to a faulty valve. A quick valve change ( he’s nothing if not well prepared) and we were back on the road at exactly 6.00 p.m. Not much to report but an enjoyable ride around to the Vibrant tap where liquids were imbibed. Just as we were about to leave Neil S turned up having spotted on his device that Barry was in the area ( I don’t know how, presumably some form of stalking device). Unfortunately this meant that I was forced by the law that forbids one man to allow another man to drink alone to have one too many ales. Thus it was that I discovered that riding a bike on two beers is fine but two point five is not. I did get home but have ordered some stabilisers for future rides. |
![]() RCR Goodwood Summer Series Rd.4Back on the circuit at Goodwood for round four of the RCR Goodwood Summer Series again on Tuesday evening for Phill Brown. Despite leaving his glasses at home, Phill kept his eyes on the prize and hung in well with the 45+ rider pack. A quartet of riders escaped the main peloton with a few laps to go, but Brown got stuck in to the sprint from the main bunch for 16th place on the night. |
![]() Saturday Club RideDespite no Saturday Club ride this week, one champion has made his way into the barrel again… Step up, for the second week in a row, our gracious leader, Mr Barry “Berocca” Wootton. Weather conditions aren’t always the most reliable or easy to read, but it’s safe to say Barry’s early premonitions of gale-force winds and torrential rain were a little pessimistic. Ok, so the rain did appear in the afternoon, but by that time of the day, the only people usually left out are the club’s mileage monsters! Nice of Barry to offer to make it up to anyone who did make it out on Saturday by buying their coffee next weekend… |
![]() Sunday Club RideThe cancellation of Saturday’s club ride and the promise of nice weather drew a record attendance for this weeks Sunday club ride. 29 made the start with one more not quite making the start and another joining on route. 31 in all. My math is good. We could have split into 5 groups but that felt a bit chaotic so we formed three disorderly queues and got underway. Another record was broken straight off the bat with the first appearance of a tandem on a club ride thanks to Joe and Emma. I did wonder whether that was going to be tricky in regards to how the lines would work vis a vis group riding but as I was quite stressed by the high turnout chose to ignore it. Seems to have been fine anyway as I had no reports of tandem related carnage. |
Group one started out with high numbers again and is starting to look like the Saturday club ride, group one on steroids with a number of very strong riders in the mix. Rich W and Eddie B took to the front from the off into a headwind and possibly lived to regret that. Soon enough others made their way to the pointy end with many epic turns from Dan S and James W amongst others. With a pretty solid headwind for the first half and still averaging 31kph we knew it was going to be amongst the quickest Sunday club rides in living memory. The blast back to Setley ridge and the cafe stop just tipped us over the 20mph mark. By this time everyone was ready for some well-earned refreshments with Dan S winning the tucker challenge with sourdough toasties and approximately eight scrambled eggs. |

![]() National Trophy Cross Country MTB Series – TongJay T was up north this week to get muddy again and described his race as the day that just kept on giving! A mid-pack gridding (start position) meant everyone dismounted and chose to run with their bikes at the first pinch point due to the moist ground conditions after a wet few days. A little trip over the bars early in the race for Jay meant his usual precise gear shifting became more of a lottery – at least he’s doing his best to keep the bike industry in business with all these unplanned ground inspections! After being truly bruised and battered all day, the only positive was that during the race, it didn’t rain! |
