RCR – TMC Goodwood TTT 4-Up

NFCC fielded a team at the RCR – TMC Goodwood Team Time Trial this week for a bit of 4-Up action on the race track. Ben George, James Noah, and Jay T all joined Phill Brown at his second home – Goodwood Race Circuit – for an evening of fast fun! The quartet hit the track towards the pointier end of proceedings and managed to hold a near 45km/h average for 10 laps of the circuit. The four riders worked exceedingly well together for the first six laps before it dropped to a three-man effort for the final four laps. With the third rider of the team crossing the line to record their final time, it was a solid 51m02 for the NFCC riders, finishing in 18th place from 45 teams on the night.

Saturday Club Ride

After last weeks diabolical weather forecast it was business as usual this Saturday with clement conditions and a challenging wind to deal with. Fourteen riders made the start, every single one of them kitted out in club jerseys, which made for two very smart pelotons leaving Brockenhurst – Thanks to all those that design, manage and procure the kit for making us such a well turned out club. The planned ride was 133Km and largely within the forest this week. With only 7 Km on the clock, the barrel was settled with another debutante and another epic fail. Chris F was the victim of “exploding seat clamp syndrome”, a mechanical mishap previously demonstrated by Smithy who had to ride home sans saddle when his gave up. But this calamity was entirely self inflicted and hence a shoe-in for the barrel. We have had a number of issues with weight weenies in the club, but Chris had decided to replace the bolts in his seat clamp with titanium ones – an all imporatnt EIGHT GRAM saving. Not only that he had fitted shorter bolts that were not long enough for the job. So, for putting the tit in titanium, Chris joins the barrel alumni this week.

This caused some delay to Group One and for Group Two to pass them whilst they waited for Chris to effect a repair. Not for the first time Matt “Renegade” Knight showed the loyalty of an alley cat and jumped onto Group Two rather than wait for what are now his former friends in Group One. Karma paid out after Fordingbridge when Matt the Turncoat punctured and Group One passed the stricken rider with a variety of bon mots, hand gestures and advice. Repair made with the marvel of Matt M’s new electric pump we were all back on the road and halfway to the coffee stop at Minstead Community Shop. Here Matt continued to demonstrate his own particular brand of loyalty and rejoined Group One. We picked up Richard P for the coffee shop leg of the ride as he joined us for the part between Lover and Bartley before he headed back north.
Pre-warned of our visit the shop had asked to take some pictures for their Instagram site. Aware of this plan, the ride leader had taken the precaution of ensuring that some of the club’s less photogenic riders were out of the country this week to ensure that the pictures showed the club in a good light. Normally the second coffee stop whingeing starts about an hour into the second leg of the ride. The bleaters excelled themselves this week by starting before we had even left the first stop. They were rewarded with a second stop at Steff’s in Beaulieu with about 110Km on the clock. All went smoothly to the ride end in Brockenhurst. The headwind back from Hatchet Pond was most challenging and not what we wanted with 130Km plus in the legs for most of the remaining riders. Kudos to all for an enjoyable day out and extra kudos to Graham F for adding over 50Km to the club ride as he prepares for his Raid Pyrenean next week.
