Ten Series Rd.5 – P164

Back on P164 for a third week in a row after the 15 CA and the rescheduled round four of the NFCC Ten Series last week. Full results from the night can be found by CLICKING HERE, and overall standings for the Ten Series can be found by CLICKING HERE.

RCR Goodwood Summer Series Rd.6

Another Tuesday evening spent at Goodwood for NFCC’s Phill Brown for round 6 of the RCR Goodwood Summer Series. A tough night of racing in windy conditions meant, not for lack of trying, a breakaway didn’t manage to form this week, and Brown found himself in a good position coming through the chicane into the final sprint. Unfortunately, a rider unclipped from their effort, leaving them tumbling over the bars and blocking the track to the finish-line ahead of Phill, ending a frustrating night with no reward for the efforts.

Saturday Club Ride

With the majority of the regulars still being away on the club training camp, it was a single peloton of just eight riders this week. The route was changed at the last minute when we realised that the planned route was going to take us into the Chalke Valley which was going to be very busy with the annual History Festival. The Plan B was a 128Km ride out west with a stop at the lovely Chettle Village Stores with their famous pies replacing cake for most of the riders.

At the start we entered into a debate with Ben T who has just discovered that his beloved Bianchi is not the legendary celeste hue but something more modern. A quick shufty at the Ford catalogue lists it as “Boy Racer Green”, but ever the bike tart, Ben has also invested in matching valve stem covers. These are an anathema to club weight weenies Phil H and Chris F who wouldn’t dream of adding weight to their steeds with such frippery. We headed off over Bolderwood and made our way northeast taking in some new roads for the club ride after Alderholt. The route was quite lumpy which will please Smithy who was at a university (who’d have guessed that!) reunion so had a legitimate excuse for hill avoidance for once.
We got to within sniffing distance of the coffee (and pie) stop, we could smell the hot pastries wafting on the breeze when Barry’s route took us up another new route which would be flattered to be called a goat track. This was like an A Road compared to the next two kilometres as the hapless route planner did not check out the terrain inspection feature on Plot a Route and had plotted a route which has 2Km of hard packed muddy path. Luckily for us it was dry as it was rideable on road bike tyres and was appreciated by Joe and Barry as it reminded them of their Tro Bro Leon adventure last month. Fun and novel as this section was it does mean that the ride leader is in the barrel this week for such incompetence in ride planning.
Phil and Joe turned the ride into a duathlon with a game of pool at Chettle Stores but when the fun was over it was back to the serious stuff and a ride back into the forest. At this stage most of the hard work has been done and it was a fast ride back through Verwood and back into the forest at Ringwood. A quick splash and dash at Dan Tanners Farm Shop was necessary as it was a day for frequent bottle replenishments. Onwards back to Brock, Phil B and Nathan both rounded up to 100 miles plus so chapeau to them.
Look forward to the return of those from the training camp next week as they demonstrate their fitness after all those Pyrenean climbs.

Sunday Club Ride

Sunday dawned cloudy with an almost pleasant chill to welcome the day.By 9am those of us who had cycled to the start were already working up a sweat ( or of course in Jane’s case a glow!). We were pleased to see a good turnout for the Ladies’ ride and it looked like plenty of support from Sotonia. Good to see other clubs getting involved. Twelve of us split equally and made our way round the S8 route anticipating a warm and pleasant ascent of both Bolderwood and Piper’s Wait! As ever the first bunch flew round and were joined by Steve B, but were still waiting for their scrambled eggs/cake when group 2 arrived. Jane wisely took a clockwise route around the loop to avoid the harsh climb as she’s nursing a knee injury. Good chat was had at the caff on such diverse subjects as endurance rides and dog training! It’ll be good to welcome back the hard riders from the pyrenees next week and hope we can still keep up despite their extreme fitness!

NFCC Women’s Ride

The club hosted another successful women’s ride on Sunday with a few new faces. A total of 11 women set off in 2 groups from Brockenhurst for a 50km loop via Bolderwood, Ringwood and Burley with a cafe stop at Holmsley tea rooms. There was definite interest in the other club rides. All riders agreed they had a lovely time and were keen for more steady rides around the forest involving cake.
